PPCN Board serves as resource consultants

The Presbyterian Pastoral Care Network (PPCN) Board is committed to supporting the health, well-being, and long-term effectiveness of pastors, church leaders, and ministry professionals by serving as a trusted resource for presbyteries across the denomination. Recognizing that ministry presents unique spiritual, emotional, relational, and vocational challenges, the Board offers consultation services designed to help presbyteries strengthen their approach to clergy care and develop sustainable systems of support for those called to pastoral leadership.

Pastors and ministry leaders often dedicate themselves to serving others through preaching, teaching, counseling, visitation, administration, and community outreach. While these responsibilities are deeply meaningful, they can also be physically demanding, emotionally taxing, and spiritually draining. Clergy frequently walk alongside individuals and families during life’s most significant moments, including celebrations, illnesses, grief, crises, and major transitions. Because of these ongoing responsibilities, it is essential that those who care for congregations also receive intentional care, encouragement, and support.

The PPCN Board exists to help make that possible.

Supporting Presbyteries in Caring for Clergy

Every presbytery seeks to encourage healthy ministry, yet many face questions about how best to care for pastors throughout different stages of their vocational journey. Whether addressing concerns related to pastoral wellness, leadership transitions, conflict, burnout, family support, or retirement planning, presbyteries often benefit from experienced guidance and practical resources.

Members of the PPCN Board are available to serve as knowledgeable resource consultants for presbyteries that wish to strengthen their clergy care ministries. Their role is not to replace local leadership but to come alongside presbyteries as trusted partners, offering insight, encouragement, and practical recommendations based on years of ministry experience.

Each consultation is tailored to the unique needs, structure, and circumstances of the requesting presbytery. Because every congregation and ministry setting is different, Board members seek to understand local contexts before suggesting strategies that can promote healthy, sustainable ministry.

Regional Consultation Services

To make consultation accessible, PPCN Board members provide services on a regional basis whenever possible. This regional model allows consultants to understand the unique characteristics, ministry opportunities, and challenges within different geographic areas.

Regional consultants often possess firsthand knowledge of local church cultures, presbytery structures, and ministry environments. This familiarity enables them to offer guidance that is practical, relevant, and sensitive to local circumstances.

Presbyteries are encouraged to contact the Board member located nearest to their region. Beginning the conversation with a nearby consultant often allows for more personalized support and ongoing collaboration as clergy care initiatives develop.

Consultation Focus Areas

Board consultations may include conversations surrounding many aspects of pastoral life and ministry. While each consultation is customized to local needs, common areas of discussion often include strengthening pastoral relationships, encouraging emotional health, preventing burnout, supporting ministers during times of transition, and developing healthy congregational expectations.

Consultants may also assist presbyteries in evaluating existing clergy care programs, identifying areas for improvement, and recommending practical resources that promote long-term ministerial health.

Accessible and Affordable Services

The PPCN Board is committed to making these valuable consultation services available to presbyteries without creating unnecessary financial barriers. Consulting assistance is provided at no charge, reflecting the Board’s commitment to serving the wider church and strengthening pastoral ministry.

Presbyteries are responsible only for reimbursing reasonable travel and related expenses when an in-person consultation is requested. This cost-sharing arrangement allows the Board to extend its ministry broadly while keeping services affordable for presbyteries of every size.

Whenever appropriate, consultations may also include follow-up conversations, additional resources, or referrals that further support ongoing clergy care efforts.

Beginning the Conversation

Presbyteries interested in strengthening their approach to clergy care are encouraged to reach out to the PPCN Board member located nearest their region. An initial conversation provides an opportunity to discuss current needs, explore available resources, and determine how consultation services can best support local ministry goals.

Whether a presbytery is launching a new clergy care initiative, reviewing existing support programs, responding to emerging challenges, or seeking guidance for long-term planning, Board members are available to listen, encourage, and assist.

In recognition of his deep commitment to the pastoral care of ministers, a fund is established in memory of Roger Harp by the Presbytery Pastoral Care Network.  Funds will be used by the PC(USA) Office of Vocation to assist in the promotion of the pastoral care of ministers.  Roger served the PC(USA) as pastor, presbytery executive and synod executive.  He was among the early leaders of the PPCN and a beloved colleague who was committed to the care of pastors in our denomination.  To pay by check, make check payable to Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), with project number E054901 in subject line, and mail to Presbyterian Church (USA), Individual Remittance Processing, PO Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA 15264-3700.
